Two weeks ago today, I became a dad for the first time at 43 years old.
Talk about a life-changing event...
For those of you who are already parents, you known this for a while now, but for guys like me - this is all new territory.
This seems to be my life for the next... who knows how long, but this little guy is worth it.
Thank God for my wife, Diana, because I seriously do not know how I would survive taking care of this little guy all alone. My wife is amazing...
I love my wife Diana, and our newest addition to our family - little, "Ivan Emmanuel de la Peña..."
He's adorable, and it's truly amazing that even when I can't sleep, just looking into his eyes makes it all completely worthwhile.
But now comes a new era in my life...
...where having good organization in my life will be key, because I'm a "virtual" entrepreneur that works from home with ...my wife, son, and little dog.
It's become clear - really quickly - that I need some good boundaries, expectations, and rules implemented to follow so I can still give my family the quality time they need, but ...also attend to our businesses', customer's, and client's needs.
This morning on the way to the gym, I watched this great video by Stu McLaren on "Managing Time as an Entrepreneur and Parent."

It was super helpful, because it served as a great reminder of the need to:
Maybe you can relate...
Maybe you're a "virtual" entrepreneur too, that works from home while your family is around. Or maybe you own an offline business like my wife's photography studio. Regardless of which kind of business you own, you know that it can be very challenging at times trying to balance work and family time.
Like everything in life when it comes to relationships, especially family, having great communication is the key. Making sure everyone is on the same page, and understanding that you love them and that you WILL separate time JUST for them is critical.
In fact, I enjoy going for quick walks now with my wife and son, even for just a few blocks, so we can get some good quality time - even for just a few minutes.
And the truth is, I feel blessed, because I'm able to do just that. To be able to sneak out for just a little while with my family during business hours on a week day - and then come back home and finish up my work.

Years ago, I started my real estate career with a little savings, sleeping on my friend's living room floor, and by printing out 200 color flyers that I then passed out to home owners living nearby.
To say that I was either perceived as, or felt like, an expert - wouldn't be true.
If anything, I felt like a loser in my late 20's, and more than anything, I was insecure about the future. I had just left what I felt was a dead-end job at a software company, because my entire department was being laid off, and I was literally the last person remaining in the entire department floor.
I'm not exaggerating...
There was only me, and I spent my 8 hours a day answering and fielding calls and surfing the Net in search for a new job.
The thought of getting a new job made me want to throw up, because I wanted to be my own boss and make my own rules.
I also didn't want to field any more calls like a telephone operator, because I felt I could do so much more if I just learned the necessary skills and applied myself.
So instead of getting a new job, I got my real estate license and did my best to survive on the little savings that I had from the software company, and went for it.
With the flyers I had printed out, I set out to walk blocks and pass them out to home owners in hopes that they would want to list their home with me.
After passing out all 200 flyers, getting yelled at by home owners, having dogs bark at me like they want to make me their lunch, I returned home and waited to see if anyone would call.
And they did...
I actually got 3 calls and one of those calls turned into a real buyer that bought a real house that got me a real commission too.
It was awesome...
That one sale turned into 3 to 5 home sales a month as I shifted to a Buyer's Agent instead of a Seller's agent.
In between the first buyer I sold a home to, and the road to later sell 3 to 5 homes a month was rough to say the least.
I went through a lot of rejection in order for me to finally start seeing results. I'm talking a LOT of rejection. More than most people, I'd say.
I think that rejection is probably the number one reason (or close to it) that most people these days will not start their own business in real estate or any other business.
Let's face it.
